Safe escape for the pilot and minimum damage to the aircraft

For arresting fighters without tailhook, a net barrier is installed in the overrun area. The net covers the width of the overrun area and is kept in place by two stanchions installed on each side of the runway. During an engagement, the net envelopes the aircraft, releases from the stanchions, and distributes the braking force generated by the connected energy absorbers. The net barrier system is referred to as BAK-15 by the USAF.

The combination of the state-of-the-art SL Net and the reliable STH Stanchion offers the highest possible safety for the pilot and reduces the risk for costly damages to the aircraft!

Arresting Net

The innovative SL Net replaces older multiple element nets. Developed in co-operation with the Swedish Air Force and well proven worldwide the SL Net is much appreciated by several main air forces including NATO countries for many reasons:

  • Minimized risk for net entanglement of canopy for safe escape for the pilot
  • Manufactured from soft materials to guarantee minimum damage to the engaging aircraft
  • Design minimizes point load on the air frame
  • Low water absorption giving stable net centre height in humid conditions
  • Low air resistance keeps the net barrier operational in heavy winds
  • Re-usable and repairable at the airbase
  • Long expected service life giving low life cycle cost

Hydraulic Stanchion

The modern hydraulic Stanchion system assures maximum reliability and has replaced the old wire operated version. A battery back-up system and integral accumulator allows the Stanchion to be safely operated in case of main power failure. The STH system operated by NATO and other main air forces features:

  • Reliable positioning detection with magnetic switches
  • NSN registration
  • Available in interconnect (with hook cable) configuration
  • ICAO adoption with fully reclined and roll-over protected foundation for minimized obstruction
  • Minimum service requirement
  • Insulated cabinet and heater option for cold climate conditions

Control System

The ATC operator remotely raises the arrester net into active position when required for military flight operation by pushing one button. The stanchions are raised, the position is confirmed and the position status changes from down to up on the monitoring panel accordingly. The modern PLC based control system features:

  • Self diagnostics
  • User friendly Operator’s Panel
  • All alarms shown in clear text
  • Local operation at site and remote control from ATC
  • Communication with ATC via digital radio or fiber cable
  • UPS for full system operation in case of power failure
